McDonald's Used AI to Sell Taste

Over the past two years, brands have raced to prove they can use AI. From chatbots to AI-generated ads, the technology has become the centerpiece of countless marketing campaigns. McDonald's Philippines took a different approach. Instead of asking what AI can do, it asked a far more interesting question: What can AI never do?

That question became the foundation of "AI Wanna Taste It," a campaign by Leo Manila introducing Chip, an AI pop star fascinated by McDonald's World Famous Fries. Through music videos and AI-generated content, Chip studies why people love the fries so much, only to realize there's one thing no algorithm can ever experience: taste. AI can analyze recipes, predict preferences, and generate images, but it can never understand what fries actually taste like. That's a limitation no software update can fix.

That's what makes the campaign strategically smart. Most brands use AI to demonstrate innovation. McDonald's uses AI to reinforce its product. Instead of making technology the hero, it turns AI into proof that some experiences remain uniquely human. The campaign shifts the conversation away from what machines can create and back to what only people can feel.

The idea also protects one of McDonald's strongest competitive advantages. In an era where AI can generate art, music, writing, and even advertising, sensory experiences become harder to replicate. Taste isn't something consumers can download or simulate. It's something they have to experience firsthand. Rather than competing in the AI race, McDonald's reframes the conversation around the one thing technology can't replace.

For marketers, the lesson extends beyond AI. Every category has something competitors can't easily copy. The strongest brands don't chase every new trend. They use those trends to remind people what makes their product irreplaceable.

The takeaway? AI can generate almost anything. It still can't generate your product's best competitive advantage.
